OK, got the basic's down (Karen's widget) and how the basics work. Can anyone tell me how to modify the layout? Like I said, I know next to nothing about how blogs work.

If you go into the dashboard and then layout you can move around the elements that make up the page, or you can select a different template for different colours etc.
